LO2: Footage in the style & conventions of chosen genre

Having looked at this short documentary in LO1 I decided to look at it in terms of the codes and conventions I would need to create my own film within the genre - one of these conventions was title graphics to introduce the beginning of the film and also Introduce the viewer to the concept of the short film.

The example shown above from 'Sheffield , another angle' shows the title graphic on a piece of footage however I believe that the letters get somewhat lost in the detail of the shot making the title harder to read, that being said I do like the fact that the documentary is set geographically for the viewer from the offset showing the location name and then a scene within that location . I personally chose to put my title graphics on a plain black background due to the editing of the first shot, I wanted the beginning of my film to match the tempo of the music therefore I used transitions such as the cross dissolve to go from shot to shot , I used this on the first shot which took the viewer into a scene of the peaks which I believe segregated and puts focus on the actual footage as opposed to the graphic design.

As done by the producer of the 'Sheffield , Another angle' documentary , I too put the title of my production as my title graphic as this aids the viewer into establishing what the short film is going to be about due to the play on words with 'peak' - as identified it could have been beneficial to make this a part of one of the shots however I think the simplicity of it becomes the genre.

In my treatment I stated that I wanted to show the raw natural beauty of the Peak District whilst also staying true to the conventions of the genre, the footage within my film was carefully planned and I too like the producer of 'Sheffield another angle' wanted to show not only how we use the area as a society but the animals who call it home too. These shots are similar in terms of subject however due to equipment constraints my shot isn't as sharp as that of the example - that being said I do believe that my shot displays more meaning as I feel the shot given by the example is strongly colour edited which gives an unrealistic expectation of what the Peaks look like on a day to day basis . On a standard day in the Peaks there is likely to be cloudy weather due to its all terrain landscapes and valleys - I believe this shot is a fair representation of that also it shows the nature in its raw form without strong colour editing.

Documenting animals and landscapes is another convention of a documentary within this genre as it shows the area as you would find it should you visit , this could possibly inspire those who haven't visited to go or even those who have , to make it a repeat visit to see these stunning views and wildlife which are uncommon within the city.

A documentary relies upon establishing shots to carry meaning and to 'document' the areas mentioned within the film , I believe drone shots are an effective way of doing this as did the producer of the example documentary . I took inspiration from the shot above showing the vast expanse of moorland and thought of potential ways I too could do this . Using the drone I planned flights across the peaks which show not only the different activities you can do such as hiking , dog walking , climbing and cycling but to show how vast the expanse is as I believe the peaks are often misinterpreted as one singular location.

Seeing things from an aerial perspective is not something we get to do often therefore it think this will help engage a young , adventurous target audience as I am potentially showing them something they have never seen before. This also shows the intricate details across the moorland which are made for our gratification for example the footpaths which are used regularly by hikers , walkers and cyclists.

To signify the ending of the clip , I put in a title sequence which stated the name of the producer/director and then important thanks to people who contributed in any way to the making of the film. This is something which I saw as a convention in this genre as it provides a definite ending for the viewer , this is a nice way to round off your footage and show the work which has gone into it by crediting the people involved. I too chose to use a bold sans serif font so that it is easily readable and clear to understand by the audience. On the final scene I used the same editing technique (cross dissolve ) and a dip to black to fade out as I did to fade in at the beginning , I also used the same font style which creates synergy throughout the video whilst also showing consistency within the planning of the product.

LO3: Final Film

LO2: How meaning is created in the creative media

How meaning was created:

Creating meaning through in my short film was down to the shots which were constructed and how they portrayed the Peak District, my main focus within my work was to stress how the Peaks are a place of astounding natural beauty - and although the area is a short journey from Sheffield city centre , as a generation we do not engage with it enough to help preserve it for years to come and future generations. I wanted to ensure that the peaks were shown in a new and exciting fashion therefore I used drone shots to show the area in a way that most won't have seen before - this shows the audience the raw natural beauty which this location has to offer and not just that but the mirage of experiences it can present.

I chose to have narration throughout my short film as this is a convention of the genre , however this helps to bring meaning also through the passion which the narrator talks about the peaks with - By giving facts , figures and personal experience it gives the viewer the compelling urge to go and visit as these are things which are often over looked when driving through on the way to big cities or on a commute. The script also had written in a section about students which appeals directly to the young 16-24, when they associate their age group with what they can see on screen for example people laughing and joking and enjoying activities , they are more likely to relate to the footage - hence creating meaning.

Overall I believe that through the shots that I have gathered for my final production that I have effectively created the right meaning , that the Peak District is a stunning location not far from our city centre - the whole production focusses around this showing insert shots of road signs pointing toward the city centre and then finally after the end credits a scene of the Sheffield sky line.

LO4: Evidence of focus group

I presented my short film to my target audience to gain some feedback to see if my production had met its requirements this sample of audience are 18-24 year olds within the C2DE demographic with a small disposable income therefore may benefit from being made aware of the free activities that the peak district has to offer. From this experience I received some feedback which identified some of the strengths and weaknesses of the product I made however most effectively showed how the product has met my intended requirements.

Strengths:

I asked the target group what they thought the purpose of the short film was and they unanimously stated that they believed it was to 'inform' the audience of what was available to them in the Peak District . The word 'inform' to me suggested that they were confident to be learning something from the footage which is a key convention within the documentary genre they were also able to tell me which activities they thought the video was promoting and one member of the group was also able to tell me that they thought it was an effort to get the younger generation more interested in their surroundings by using a more fast paced running.

I was also informed from the feedback that the audience thought the drone shots were an interesting addition as they get to see the peak district from above which may not happen otherwise 'this gives another perspective on the countryside' I was told. The feedback also states that the soundtrack was well thought out and fit the content.shown on screen.

Weaknesses:

One of the identified weaknesses from my focus group was the audio , one of the members of the focus group told me that the audio still had a slight echo despite the editing to try and rid this - this would be something I could have worked on if I had more time and better resources I would have potentially been able to improve the quality of the audio. Another weakness identified through the feedback from the target audience was that the film could have displayed a wider variety of clips and shown some more of the mentioned locations and activities which were spoken about during the narration. Due to time constraints it wasn't possible to visit all the locations mentioned in the script however should I have chance to improve upon the product I would consider looking for local events which are held in the Peak District such as fell running , the Eroica and paragliding.

LO3: Applying appropriate visuals and applying audio effects

AUDIO EDITING:
I dragged the main audio from the editing panel from the cache into the audio tracks , choosing a multitrack layout so that I was able to see which sounds were layered on top of one another . I created two separate tracks to keep my files organised , one for dialogue and one for music - this meant that whenever I was navigating the edit I was able to jump directly back to whichever section I needed to through dragging on the horizontal bar to the bottom of my work station. The different sections were each defined by separate colours - this meant that if one of the assets was out of place , I was able to identify this and return it back to its audio track which helped me stay organised. I then began to divide the audio up into useful assets which could be matched to both the soundtrack and footage, to do this I used the razor tool , I was then able to cit sections from he audio where there was dead air making the narration seamless and professional.

When listening to some of the audio clips, they sounded lost beneath the vocals in the soundtrack - I searched for an instrumental version of the song however one wasn't available therefore I needed to work with the quality of audio I had available - I then selected the dialogue audio and increased the dB reading to maximum so that it could be heard clearly and defined from the song. In some areas I had to physically cut the music track using the razor tool and then turn down the sections audio using the same slider - then when putting back into Premier , I could create a separate track for the song which played beneath so that it wasn't as clear that the song changed volume.

Because of the facility the audio was recorded in, there was some slight echoing on some of the audio recordings - these couldn't be fixed by basic correction therefore I selected the effects panel , navigated to noise reduction and then into the adaptive noise reduction. I then changed the preset from default to De-reverb and altered the sliders until the effect was audible.

As with the fading intro to the footage , I decided to fade the audio in too , this could have been done in Premier Pro however you have much more control over the period the effect takes place for. I did this by dragging the key frames which are shown by little grey squares - dragged the square to the right which in turn creates the yellow arch on the audio track as shown .

When the arch meets the top of the audio track , the song reaches full volume and levels out - this again can be controlled by the slider as shown above.

Video Editing

To introduce the beginning of the film as per convention, I created a title graphic using a pre made graphic available as part of the Adobe Premier pro , I then added text to the graphic which I wanted to appear one sentence at a time , I did this by layering the graphics on top of one another and then using the tip to black effect which blended straight into the background of the title graphic, these gentle transitions were created as to work with the soft instrumental intro of the song.

This editing technique wasn't used on the example piece that I looked at as a part of LO1, however I thought this would be a nice way to introduce the serenity to the beginning of the film before the more lively aspect begins once the musics main body kicks in. I also used cross dissolves throughout the short film which also also have this calming effect throughout, this helps with the flow of the visuals however when the more energetic scenes are shown with people taking part in outdoor pursuits, I decided to do more harsh , jump cuts to the beat of the music as to engage the audience particularly those who are younger which is one of the most important things to me as I mentioned in my treatment as the main aim was to younger people more engaged with their local environment.

This edit took place primarily on the drone shots however was one of the most important to ensure the running of the short film, when putting the clips into Adobe Premier I was made aware that some of the clips were either too short or too long - by slowing the footage down you receive a smoother looking shot and more lengthy shots can become tedious . The clips which were effected by this I right clicked upon and then selected the drop down panel called 'speed/duration' I then either sped up or slowed down the the clips . This was a possibility do the the clips being shot in a high frame rate therefore they could be slowed down without looking staggered.
